“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'” - Mr. Fred Rogers

I have always loved this quote by Fred Rogers. As the movie about his life is coming out, "Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood", writing this just felt right. The idea that there are always people who are willing to step up and help is so important to understand. At times life can feel really scary. We go through and experience traumatic things on large and small scales; a natural disaster, a car accident an injury while engaging in an everyday activity. While some people have these experiences and are not impacted, others find themselves struggling. It could be that they are having difficulty sleeping, nervous about being alone or afraid to leave their homes. For some these events could lead to behaviors that are an effort to manage life situations, such as a need to be in control or always feeling that you have to make sure everyone is ok. These behaviors can lead to an increased stress in relationships and unrealistic expectations of self. For some people, years will go and then, what feels like out of nowhere, they have feelings of anxiety or depression which they can't explain.

"Look for the helpers." They don’t always have to been some big organized group. Sometimes it is a local neighbor checking in or a stranger offering their phone so you can reach out to loved ones. When you look for the helpers you will start to see there is a lot of love and kindness. Those helpers remind us that even though things feel hard, they can get better. If you find yourself struggling reach out and get support. Being able to work with someone who can provide you with a confidential place to share your thoughts and feelings, and help you gain coping skills to manage what you are experiencing, can make such a difference in your life. Let me help. Corey
